Three Talks Not To Miss at Camp Good Life (Autumn).
Ideas are at the root of what we do here at The Good Life Society, and each year writers, thinkers, movers and shakers come along to share theirs.
From Michael Morpurgo to Michael Rosen and Helen Sharman to Dr John Cooper-Clarke (all previous Good Life Experience speakers) we’ve long punched above our weight when it comes to inspirational speakers and ideas.
This year, at Camp Good Life (Autumn), will be no different.
To help you begin to plan your weekend with us, we’ve hand-picked three great talks/interviews we think you simply have to see.
#1. Baxter Dury.
The oat milk latte poet laureate of London's Ladbroke Grove, Baxter Dury has spent the last 15 years uniquely chronicling the inner workings of his (and everyone's) human condition over six critically acclaimed albums. His latest, The Night Chancers, was released in March 2020.
Baxter’s first book, Chaise Longue, to be published by Corsair August 2021, is a candid portrayal of teenage life from the heart of rock n roll bohemia, recalling what happened when punk rock star Ian Dury disappeared to make films in the late 80s, leaving his teenage son in the care of his roadie in a run-down flat in Hammersmith. This was no ordinary roadie; this was the Sulphate Strangler. The Strangler, having taken a lot of LSD in the 60s, was prone to depression, anger and hallucinations. He was also, as the name suggests, a drug dealer. What could possibly go wrong?
In a period that we can now only imagine, a young Baxter ricocheted from one adventure to another, narrowly swerving one disaster only immediately to collide with another. From the leafy lanes of Chiswick and beyond through to a post-Franco Barcelona, at times his situation was perilous in the extreme – the world is lucky to have him at all. Chaise Longue is an intimate account of those escapades, evocatively illuminating a bohemian west London populated with feverishly grubby characters.
#2. Prof. Gavin Screaton.
Professor Gavin Screaton is the Head of the Medical Sciences Division at Oxford University.
As such, Gavin has been at the absolute centre of the global race to create a vaccine against Covid.
In this exclusive conversation, Gavin and Charlie Gladstone will chat about this extraordinary period and the personal and professional challenges that Gavin and his team faced to bring the vaccine to life.
Expect a wide ranging and revelatory hour.
#3. Charlie Gladstone & Mark Shayler.
Charlie Gladstone, co-founder of The Good Life Society, talks about his book, Do Team, with Mark Shayler.
Charlie’s book draws on his thirty years of creating and running small businesses and his realisation that it is people that interest him more than anything else.
The book is about getting the best from everyone you encounter; at work or at home and anywhere in between.
In this exclusive conversation, Charlie will be interviewed by his friend a fellow Do Books author Mark Shayler.
